This compendium showcases a sample of projects and programmes that are working on or towards gender-transformative climate smart development. The selection focuses on interventions implemented in the East Asia and Pacific region and includes case studies from further afield. The case studies represent a mix of promising early initiatives and maturing approaches. A cross-section of goals was sought to reflect UNICEF programming areas. It is aimed that the case studies will ignite interest, the exchange of practice and learning, and inspire action. In total 13 case studies are included in this compendium. Initiatives were shortlisted if they demonstrated at least 2 dimensions of climate-smart programming and at least 3 of the following elements:
- Identify and measure the ways that climate change exacerbates existing gender inequalities
- Work to challenge the structural barriers that uphold gender inequality
- Build the agency of women, girls and people with non-binary gender identities
- Work with men and boys to engage and embrace gender equality
- Work intersectionally
- Embed women’s, girls’ and gender-diverse people’s perspectives at all stages
- Takes a life course and intergenerational perspective
- Work at multiple levels and across sectors
- Partner with women’s and girls’ rights organizations
