UNDP: This Study Paper aims to provide an overview of the nexus between human rights and climate change. It is intended to inform and broaden the perspectives of policymakers and practitioners, foster discussions, and stimulate further research. It sets out the human rights framework aligned with the core UN human rights treaties and exemplifies how impacts of climate change can affect the enjoyment of those rights. Where possible, it also cites examples of good practices of climate actions in response to those impacts, that take their effect on human rights enjoyment into account in the policymaking process.
The study was developed on the initiative of UNDP Viet Nam in light of the country’s 2021 commitment to net zero by 2050, which would indicate an increased interest and accelerated prioritization of climate actions in Viet Nam.
